You know the story of Avatars Wan, Aang, and Korra. Now, come learn the story of Avatar Aria, the second Avatar in the cycle.
Avatar Wan worked hard to rid the world of troublesome spirits. However, not all spirits are troublesome. Some, like the great lionturtles, are gentle and even want to protect the people. In his dedication, Wan often overlooked this and sent all spirits good and evil to the spirit world. Most people celebrated this act. They could travel the world without fear. Unfortunately, they soon realized they had given up the protection of the lionturtles, and here is where the trouble began.
Most people lived near the lionturtles, and some even lived on them. Without their protection, the people didn't know where to go anymore. Many simply stayed where they were. They were too afraid to leave. Others felt they had been treated unfairly and left to create their own cities. Usually Lion Cities and New Cities would erupt in wars and feuds, especially if they were too close together. It became Avatar Wan's job to be a peacekeeper, but he was only one person and couldn't keep everyone from fighting.
In order to attempt to keep the peace, Avatar Wan divided the world into four separate nations: The Fire Nation, The Earth Kingdom, The Northern Water Tribe, and The Eastern Air Temple. The center of these nations was the place the lionturtles of fire, earth, water, and air had been. Wan also put leaders in place to help him keep the peace: The Fire Lord, The Earth King, The Water Chief, and The Air Roshi. He told the new rulers they could reign as they saw fit, and he would only intervene where they failed.
With the lionturtles gone, so too were the powers they once provided. For a long while, it seemed like the only person who would be able to bend the elements was the Avatar. Then people began to watch the world around them and learn that the lionturtles weren't the only creatures who could bend the elements. The people of The Fire Nation watched dragons. The Earth Kingdom watched badger moles. The Water Tribe watched the moon. The Air Temple watched the flying bison. Slowly, one person at a time, the gifts to bend the elements came back to the people. Maybe they didn't need the lionturtles after all.
Finally, Avatar Wan died, leaving behind a world a little more peaceful than the one he was born into. The world was worried though. Would the peace he had fought so hard for remain? Would the spirits come back out? Would a new Avatar come to replace the old one? No one was certain.
It has been sixteen years since Avatar Wan died. Unfortunately, peace has not remained. Many small skirmishes have been fought between nations and sometimes within nations. No one really knows what starts these battles, but one thing is known: they often include benders. Many think if they were to kill all the benders and the creatures who teach the bending arts, then the world could settle into everlasting peace. If the Avatar still exists, now would be a good time for him to show up.
