Name: Chong Wen
Gender:Male
Age:20
Nationality:Water Tribe
Bending:None
Faction:None
Appearance:
Disarmingly handsome: has been one way Chong has been described as. His deep blue eyes and knowing, charming smile that exude confidence in oneself and abilities have many a time caused a nervous young lady to forget how to speak as he holds her with his intense eyes.
His skin is tanned and tight over a well toned body used to the rigours of physical labour. His dark dair falls straight to his shoulders- but for the last inch of so which curiously seems to get a wave to it at that length.
He has taken to growing a thin and very well kept goatee which he is immensly proud of as it’s dark shape is finally losing it’s whispy teenage look and beginning to get a more adult feel and strength to it.
He wears long grey pants and a blue shirt.
Personality:
Chong is a light-hearted fellow. He believes that the world is serious enough as it is, so it doesn't need another soul mulling and wallowing in misery and despair. That said, he doesn't seek to be a ray of sunshine that brightens the days of others in their gloom- one might call him selfish in that respect, but the happiness that comes first in his world is his own. He generally distances himself from anything emotionally serious as it can bring about melancholy and bring forth many memories he'd rather leave buried. That's not to say he's a heartless man; he will attempt to offer a balm for ones woe, but if the first attempt fails, he begins to wash his hands of the offending emotion.
He likes to take life for it's adventure and finds himself drawn to people and situations that echo that burning desire. To explore a world still freshly opened and untamed. Where anything could be possible. Humanity was no longer leashed to the backs of Lion-Turtles- now is the age of mankind- and it is an exciting time.
Not a man given over to violent passions, he is certainly more of a lover than a fighter. Preferring to use his tongue to get himself out of trouble. Yet he is not a coward, there are times when one must take up arms to defend oneself and in these cases, there is a certain appeal to the rush and excitement of a good fight...as long as one is still alive at the end of it- the main reason he doesn't live to fight: there'd probably be someone out there one day who's better at it than he- which is why he fights dirty.
History:
Chong was born the younger twin into a family of Whalers. The large sea creatures are valued for...well, everything. Meat, blubber, bone and flesh and even fur. There isn't a useless morsel on a whale, and that made them valuable- especially in the freezing north. Both he and his brother new blood and work from a very young age. Their father believed in hard work and the value of it- not to mention that every pair of hands made lighter work of the immense creatures.
When he and Sum (his brother) weren't working with their family, they were usually off making trouble in town. They were constant, annoying, little practical jokers, finding any excuse to laugh at another persons expense. They also became very fast runners as more often than not, the victims of their little jokes didn't find them funny at all- especially councilman Jattik; who for some reason couldn't see the funny side of his office being filled with prawns and left to rot while he was away on his weekend holiday.
He and Sum were both growing to be handsome young men- and they both knew it. It became a competition between the two of them as to who had the most young ladies lining up behind them. Of course, being twins, it was also a game to confuse the poor interested girls as to which twin was which- leading to more than one broken heart.
Chong’s life and the life of his family and business changed completely at the age of 12. He and Sum were out on the coast ice-racing when they spotted a kind of whale they hadn’t seen before. It was gnarled and ugly but white like the snow. They edged closer to the waterline to get a better look at it- and that was when they learned just how immense in size it was. The whale breached to a spectacular height before them and for what felt like an age, they were caught in it’s towering shadow. That was when it came crashing down and split the ice they stood upon.
They were fished out of the water half an hour later by a passing fishing boat. Too long in the bitterly cold water. Sum was already dead of cold when they were rescued; Chong was in fever for several weeks before he recovered.
Rather than be thankful that they still had one son and find consolation in that, his parents despaired. His mother for the longest time would neither eat nor drink and frequently became ill for it, constantly sulking.
His father raged. Raged at the whale that took his son- raged and Chong for letting his brother die. Life became unbearable. His father turned all his businesses attention to hunting this “White Whale”.
Over the next several years, chong tried many a time to run away but only to be found by his father or his workers, who would beat him for daring to abandon his duty of “avenging his brother, who’s death he had caused.” It was actually sweet relief when they finally did find that cursed whale.
After a week of chasing it down, peppering it with harthingys when they could get close enough, it was sweet relief and gut wrenching familiarity that Chong felt as the whale breached high above their ship and smashed it to splinters.
Chong was in the sea alone 2 days and nights before he was rescued by a merchants vessel.
That day, he left the Water Tribe, his family, everything behind. He wouldn’t return to that dark place; so found refuge as a crewmember, eventually earning the trust and respect of his shipmates and merchant masters who taught th young man the skills he needed at sea and in mercentile trade.
Now, having saved up enough and with words of encouragement from his mentors, Chong has set his sights on travelling the world, exploring new routes and trades to be had. It is a life he knows his brother would loved to have lived.
